Warehouse Picking: Evolved

Over the last couple of months, Verdant has worked in close conjunction with Robbies Confectionery to develop a new picking system for its warehouse staff, which aims to improve efficiency & accuracy in the picking of orders.  With a catalogue of thousands of products and hundreds of orders per day, the accuracy of picking and optimising the picking process has long been an essential part of Robbies business.  Using brand new technology and hardware, Verdant has developed an Android application, backed by a .NET MVC Web Service, which enables pickers to complete their orders easily and swiftly.

The solution is multi-faceted – it is flexible enough to be used on both handsets and tablets, which is important for the dynamic warehouse environment.  Handsets are attached to pickers arms using neoprene holders, allowing full control of the touch screen interface while staying unobtrusively out of the way when not needed.  Scanning is enabled through Bluetooth connected handheld scanners, attached via lanyards to the pickers belts.  This allows both hands to be free to handle stock while the system is only a hand movement away.  Developed for Android’s new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and running over Wi-Fi, the solution is lightning fast, always on and completely flexible and upgradeable as new hardware becomes available.
